PROVINCIAL SEAL AND THE PHYSICAL PROFILE OF THE PROVINCE

The features or images captured in the corporate seal represents the province’s potentials – the mountains replicate the Sierra Madre Series in the eastern part of the province and the Caraballo and Mamparang ranges in the south.  It also illustrates that majority of its land resources are rolling to steep and very steep areas.  In the middle right hand corner of the seal are trees that represent its major natural resources.  It also signifies that the province contains the upper Cagayan River basin watershed.  The replica of bundled rice, tobacco and corn identifies the three (3) main crops grown in the province as a source of living.  The lower portion of the seal represents the abundance of inland bodies of freshwater.  This portion of the seal also divided the middle that signifies that the Cagayan River dissects this inland province of which other small rivers and tributaries flow to the mouth at Aparri, Cagayan.

PHYSICAL PROFILE

1.      Location and Size

Quirino Province lies in the southeastern portion of Cagayan Valley (Region II), approximately between 121° 00’ to 122° 02’ N latitude and 15° 54.8’ to 16° 38.6’ W longitude. It is situated within the Upper Cagayan River Basin bounded by Isabela on the north, Aurora on the east and southeast and Nueva Vizcaya on the west and southwest.

The Sierra Madre mountain range provides a natural barrier on the eastern and southeastern border and Mamparang range on the western part of the province.

The province occupies an aggregate land area of 305,718 hectares (3,057.18 sq. km.) which is approximately 11.39 percent of the regional area and 1.02 percent of the total land area of the country.

2.      Political Subdivision

Quirino has only one congressional district, six (6) municipalities and 132 barangays. The first three (3) municipalities of Aglipay, Diffun and Maddela were created on November 11, 1950 through Executive Order No. 368 followed by Saguday on June 21, 1959 under R. A. 2519 and Cabarroguis on June 21, 1969 under R.A. 5554 which was taken from portions of Diffun and Aglipay. The sixth and youngest municipality of Nagtipunan was created on February 25, 1983 under Batas Pambansa Blg. 345 dividing the municipality of Maddela.
